Pack hound and tracker
Bassets are generally sociable and friendly but follow scent independently and with a deep voice. Train patiently through rewards and use a long line where recall is uncertain. This heavy dog must walk daily to retain muscle. Brief outings accelerate weight and mobility problems. Manage stairs and jumping practically without removing normal movement.
Appearance must not damage function
Inspect eyes, skin folds and long ears every day and keep nails short. Painful red eyes, lameness or chronically rubbed skin are not normal breed type. Breed-specific judging guidance warns against excessive skin, malformed ribs or sternum and poor leg and foot placement. Choose a lighter, freely moving dog with useful ground clearance.
Health and choosing a breeder
Dutch club rules require ultrasound for Persistent Müllerian Duct Syndrome in males. Also ask for eye examination, thrombopathia DNA where relevant and family information on hips, elbows, backs, gastric torsion and longevity. Watch both parents awake and moving and inspect original results. Avoid lines where corrective eye, skin or limb surgery is treated as routine.
