Small hound with great drive
The Fauve was selected to hunt in dense and hilly ground. It is often more handler-oriented than some pack hounds but remains persistent on scent. Practise recall early and use a long line around wildlife. Long walks, tracking and varied training fit better than only ball play or access to a garden.
Coat and construction
Brush the harsh coat weekly and have dead hair stripped functionally. Clipping softens texture. Check ears, feet and ticks after outdoor work. Keep the low dog lean and increase jumping and long workloads gradually. Its relatively short back should move powerfully, and a deep chest must not remove ground clearance.
Health and choosing a breeder
Dutch club rules currently mandate no screening. Ask proactively about patellas, eyes, hips and family records on epilepsy, back disease, ear infection and thyroid problems. Review original documents and inbreeding in the small population. Choose straight weight-bearing legs, free breathing and stable social behaviour over maximum lowness or an excessively heavy front.
