Sociable scent hound

The French Basset worked in a pack and is generally social with dogs and people. Outside, an interesting trail may matter more than recall. Train kindly and consistently, use a long line when necessary and provide searching and walking every day. A garden or brief neighbourhood rounds do not meet its scent-hound background.

A low build without exaggeration

Keep the dog lean and muscular and manage stairs, jumping and long workloads sensibly during growth. Normal free movement remains important. Inspect long ears, nails and pads and brush the short coat weekly. Select a functional ribcage and straight weight-bearing feet. An extremely low or crooked front is not a breed virtue.

Health and choosing a breeder

The Dutch club currently requires no screening. Still request assessment of eyes, patellas and hips and family information on back disease, elbows, epilepsy and ear problems. Breed-specific judging guidance warns of an underdeveloped chest and excessively bowed front legs. Watch parents move and ask about longevity, inbreeding and any corrective surgery.
