Not silent and not automatically obedient

A Basenji does not bark conventionally but can yodel, howl and make many other sounds. Independence and hunting passion are functional traits. Train positively, secure doors and garden and often use a lead or long line outdoors. Boredom may produce escape or destruction. Calm early socialisation helps with strangers, dogs and time alone.

Exercise and everyday care

The short coat is simple, but this athlete needs long daily walks, play and safe sprinting. Many Basenjis dislike rain. That does not reduce their exercise requirement. Monitor teeth, knees and body weight and protect from cold. Females often cycle only once a year, which affects planning but is not evidence of general health.

Health and choosing a breeder

The Dutch breed club requires current ECVO eye examination and Fanconi syndrome DNA testing. Also ask about PRA DNA, thyroid values, hips and gastrointestinal disease in the family. Any carrier must only be responsibly mated to clear. Inspect original results and ancestry and choose stable behaviour and diversity over colour or a supposedly rare annual litter.
