Water dog and companion
Barbets worked on waterfowl and still enjoy swimming, searching and retrieving. They learn readily through kind training but often cope poorly with being left for long periods. Build solitude gradually and combine daily exercise with scent work and calm cooperation. Hunting interest varies between lines. Practise recall and water safety from puppyhood.
Curly coat care
The coat sheds little but traps dirt and mats without systematic care. Comb to the skin at least weekly, especially armpits, groin, ears and feet, and maintain a practical length. Check and dry ears after swimming. “Hypoallergenic” is not a guarantee: anyone with allergies should meet several adult dogs before committing.
Health and choosing a breeder
Request original hip, elbow and current ECVO eye results and discuss epilepsy, thyroid disease and family longevity. Appropriate DNA tests depend on the line and do not replace clinical screening. Verify Dutch Dog Data where possible, watch both parents move and ask about inbreeding and diversity in this relatively small population. Choose moderate coat, free movement and stable recovery over rare colour.
