Sensitive and reserved

Azawakhs combine sighthound prey behaviour with traditional guarding and close attachment to their own people. Many dislike intrusive strangers and need gradual, choice-based socialisation rather than forced handling. Harsh correction damages trust. Manage introductions, children and small animals carefully and use secure fencing. Recall cannot be trusted around fast-moving wildlife.

Lean body and daily care

The breed is naturally very lean, with visible musculature and sometimes ribs, but that is not permission to ignore weight loss or disease. Provide daily walks and regular sprinting on safe enclosed ground, then warm quiet rest. The fine coat offers little protection from Dutch cold and rain. Keep nails short and increase running load gradually to protect feet and muscles.

Health and choosing a breeder

Current Dutch breed information specifies no compulsory health tests. Ask nonetheless for cardiac and ECVO eye examination and family information on epilepsy, autoimmune disease, thyroid problems, bloat, sudden death and longevity. Verify imported ancestry and relatedness in this small population. Sighthounds can respond differently to anaesthesia, so choose a veterinarian familiar with them. Select stable recovery and sound movement rather than extreme thinness.
