Companion with terrier roots

Australian Terriers were practical farm dogs and vermin hunters. They are affectionate with their household but may bark, dig and chase when those drives have no outlet. Train with rewards, practise calm greetings and manage small pets. Their compact size still requires daily walks, nose work and varied learning. Children should respect boundaries and never corner or carry the dog.

Coat and everyday care

Brush the harsh double coat weekly and have dead topcoat hand-stripped periodically. Clipping changes its protective texture. Check teeth, nails, skin and knees routinely and maintain lean weight. Use gradual conditioning for sport and prevent repeated high jumps while growing without restricting normal free play.

Health and choosing a breeder

Dutch breeding rules require patella examination. Also request a current ECVO eye result and ask about Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, diabetes, thyroid disease, allergy, epilepsy and knee problems throughout the family. Review original documents and meet a parent in an ordinary setting. Choose free movement, stable behaviour and moderate proportions over extreme smallness or maximum coat.
