Rare working specialist
The Stumpy was developed to drive cattle in harsh Australian conditions. It reacts quickly, bonds strongly and may guard or control movement without careful guidance. Early socialisation should build calm recovery around people, dogs, livestock and traffic. Use reward-based training and purposeful work while teaching rest. This is not a quieter or easier version of the Australian Cattle Dog.
Natural tail and body care
The short tail is an inherited natural feature and must not be confused with docking. Verify it on the pedigree and breeder records. Brush the double coat weekly, inspect feet and muscles after work and increase running and jumping gradually during growth. Keep the dog lean and combine physical exercise with tracking, obedience or stock work rather than repetitive ball chasing.
Health and choosing a breeder
Dutch breed information specifies hip and elbow evaluation, ECVO eye examination, BAER hearing testing and DNA tests for PRA and primary lens luxation. Check the actual results for both parents and ask about spondylosis, epilepsy, patellas and longevity. Because the population is very small, relatedness and genetic diversity deserve explicit discussion alongside test results.
