Small terrier character
Silkies are alert, curious and often confident around dogs far larger than themselves. Reward calm behaviour and practise recall, handling and time alone from puppyhood. Terrier hunting interest needs management around rodents and birds. Children must respect the dog's retreat and never carry it unsupervised. Daily walks and nose games matter despite the compact size.
Coat and daily care
Comb the fine coat to the skin several times weekly and keep hair clear of the eyes. A practical pet trim can support welfare, but the coat should never hide skin problems or restrict movement. Brush teeth daily, keep nails short and use a harness that does not press on the windpipe. Prevent jumping from furniture while a puppy and maintain lean weight to protect small joints.
Health and choosing a breeder
No screening is compulsory under the current Dutch breed rules, so buyers must ask explicitly. Request patella assessment and a recent ECVO eye examination and discuss Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, tracheal collapse, diabetes, epilepsy, dental disease and family longevity. Meet a parent and reject persistent coughing, limping or fear. Choose robust proportions and free movement over the smallest possible puppy.
