Herding drive and training
Despite the name, the Australian Shepherd was developed in the United States to manage livestock. Many learn in very few repetitions, bond closely and notice movement intensely. Without guidance they may attempt to control runners, children or bicycles. Use positive, varied training and broad socialisation, and select a line whose drive suits your actual home. Sensitivity makes force and chaotic handling particularly unhelpful.
Coat, work and settling
The medium double coat needs weekly brushing and daily attention during heavy shedding. Adults need substantial walking plus scenting, herding, agility, obedience or other purposeful work. Constant running only creates a fitter dog without emotional regulation. Teach rest, waiting and disengagement from movement from puppyhood. Protect growing joints from repetitive jumping and provide a quiet place where the dog can sleep undisturbed.
Health and Dutch club requirements
Current ASCN policy requires HD-A or -B, clear elbow results, an ECVO eye examination no more than one year old and DNA results for MDR1, HSF4, CEA, PRA and DM. Ask for original documents and how carriers are paired. Carrier does not automatically mean affected. Two merle dogs must never be combined because puppies can suffer severe eye and hearing abnormalities. Family health and stable behaviour remain essential beyond tests.
