Work and an off-switch

Kelpies learn at great speed and notice every movement. Without appropriate work they may stalk, chase or control children, traffic and other dogs. Offer herding, tracking, obedience or varied sport, but teach relaxation just as deliberately. Constant ball throwing and ever more kilometres can create an over-aroused athlete. Use short precise reward-based sessions and protect sensitive dogs from harsh correction.

Body and coat care

The practical coat needs weekly brushing and extra care during shedding. Check feet, nails and muscles after work and provide water and cooling in warm conditions. Delay repetitive jumping, sharp turns and long road running until growth is complete. Keep the light athletic body lean and alternate demanding days with recovery.

Health and choosing a breeder

The Dutch breed-club rules include hip and elbow evaluation, ECVO eye examination and Doppler cardiac screening. Request current original reports for both parents and ask about cerebellar abiotrophy DNA status where relevant to the line. Discuss epilepsy, cruciate injury, behaviour and working longevity among relatives. Choose stable nerves, sound structure and a real ability to settle, not maximum intensity.
