Cattle Dogs were bred to move reluctant livestock over huge distances. Fast reactions, gripping behaviour and suspicion of strangers need knowledgeable guidance. Socialisation should teach calm neutrality, not uncontrolled excitement. Reward-based impulse control, cooperative handling and structured work are essential. Under-stimulation can appear as chasing, nipping, guarding or obsessive ball behaviour, while endless exercise only creates a fitter restless dog.
Exercise and care
Combine substantial walks with tracking, obedience, stock work or another controlled sport and schedule real rest. Build jumping and running loads gradually until growth is complete. Brush the weatherproof coat weekly and daily during shedding. Inspect ears, feet and muscles after work and keep this compact athlete lean.
Health and choosing a breeder
Dutch breed information calls for hip and elbow assessment, ECVO eye examination, BAER testing for cochlear deafness and DNA status for PRA and primary lens luxation. Request identifiable original results for both parents, not a verbal assurance. Also discuss spondylosis, patellas, epilepsy and family longevity. A unilaterally deaf dog can seem normal in daily life, which is why formal BAER testing matters.
