A true pack hound
This breed was developed in France to hunt smaller game in a pack. Cooperation with other hounds, persistence on a trail and a carrying voice are functional traits, not faults that disappear through basic pet training. It needs substantial daily distances and purposeful scent work. Recall may fail once a trail is found, so use a long line and genuinely escape-proof running ground.
Care and living environment
The short coat only needs weekly brushing, but inspect drop ears, feet and ticks after every working day. Pack-bred dogs usually value canine company and can struggle with long periods alone. Their voice, stamina and hunting focus make an apartment or busy off-lead park a poor match. Build roadwork gradually and keep the athlete lean.
Health and choosing a breeder
The Dutch population is very small and many dogs are imported. Verify an FCI pedigree, import documents and the coefficient of inbreeding. Ask for official hip and ECVO eye results even where they are not compulsory, plus family information on epilepsy, thyroid disease, gastric torsion and working longevity. Meet adult relatives and choose stable pack behaviour and durable movement over appearance alone.
