Work and character

The American Water Spaniel was developed to flush and retrieve from boat and shore. It needs cooperation, scent work and movement every day and does poorly as a yard dog alone. Train positively, vary exercises and introduce swimming and retrieving gradually. Good socialisation prevents reserve from becoming fear. Reliable recall and impulse control are essential around wildlife and water.

Coat and safety

Comb the dense wavy or curly coat weekly and check skin, armpits and ears after swimming. Rinse dirty water and dry the ear area without cleaning deeply. Supervise cold or fast water and use appropriate flotation where necessary. Keep the dog lean and delay heavy sport until maturity.

Health and choosing a breeder

The American parent club recommends official hip evaluation, specialist eye examination and cardiac assessment. Also ask about epilepsy, hypothyroidism, diabetes, allergy and alopecia among relatives. A registration number may only show that tests occurred, not that every result was favourable. Read the documents. The population is small, so request inbreeding coefficient and genetic diversity information too.
