Pack and hunting behaviour

American Foxhounds were bred to follow a scent in a pack for long periods. They are generally social with other dogs but may be unhappy without company and real activity. A trail can matter more than recall, so use a lead, long line and securely fenced running ground. Their loud musical voice and exercise needs make close urban housing impractical.

Exercise and care

Plan long walks, controlled running after maturity and extensive scent work every day. A garden alone is not enough. Brush the short coat weekly and check drop ears and pads after outdoor work. Keep the lean dog muscular without overfeeding. Sudden abdominal swelling or unproductive retching may indicate gastric torsion and requires emergency care.

Health and choosing a breeder

The Dutch population is tiny. Ask for official hip evaluation, general heart and eye examination and family records on epilepsy, thyroid disease, gastric torsion and an inherited platelet-function disorder. Unexplained bleeding or bruising deserves investigation before breeding or purchase. Verify imported pedigree and inbreeding and choose durable working structure and stable social behaviour over speed alone.
