Character and activity

American Cockers should be free, cheerful and without fear. Train gently through rewards and socialise carefully with children, dogs, grooming and time alone. Compact size does not remove the spaniel need to walk, sniff and cooperate. Avoid lines where nervousness or defensive handling is explained as normal and choose a puppy that visibly recovers after something new.

Coat, ears and eyes

Comb long feathering to the skin several times weekly and maintain a functional trim. Excess coat must not conceal movement or sight. Keep heavy ears dry during meals and watch for odour, redness or shaking. Large eyes are vulnerable. Squinting, clouding or sudden pain requires prompt care. Keep weight lean to protect knees and hips.

Health and choosing a breeder

Dutch clubs require hip and ECVO examination. PRA DNA and patella assessment are mandatory or strongly advised depending on the club. Request all four results and family records on glaucoma, cataract, ear and skin disease, autoimmunity and heart problems. A show title cannot replace tests. Choose open eyes, moderate coat, stable behaviour and free movement over an extreme stop or abundant furnishing.
