Power and independence

American Akitas often bond closely with their household while remaining reserved with strangers and potentially intolerant of other dogs, particularly of the same sex. Socialisation should create safe neutrality and control, not an expectation that every adult must be sociable. Use rewards, clear routines, robust equipment and physical separation when required. Never leave this powerful dog unsupervised with children or unfamiliar animals.

Coat, exercise and safety

Brush the double coat weekly and daily during heavy seasonal shedding. Substantial walks, sniffing and short training sessions maintain body and mind, but prey and conflict behaviour often make off-lead exercise unsuitable. High secure fencing and controlled introductions are essential. Keep a growing dog lean and increase load slowly to protect hips and knees. Provide cool rest during warm weather beneath the dense coat.

Health and choosing a breeder

Hip dysplasia is central to Dutch breed-club rules. Also ask for official eye and patella information and family records concerning thyroid disease, sebaceous adenitis, autoimmune illness, VKH-like eye and skin disease and gastric torsion. Inspect original documents and both parents in an ordinary environment, not only at a show. Select stable behaviour, free movement and genetic diversity over maximum head width or mass.
