Character and management

Malamutes were selected to pull heavy loads with endurance rather than wait constantly for commands. Train positively and consistently and invest in reliable harness work and rest. Many have strong prey behaviour and may become dog-selective as adults. Growing up with one cat does not guarantee safety with unfamiliar cats or small livestock. Strong high fencing and lead management are often necessary.

Exercise and coat

Combine long walks with suitable pulling, tracking and problem solving. Build load gradually and avoid hard work in heat. The thick double coat must not be shaved for cooling. Brush weekly and daily during heavy seasonal shedding. Provide shade, cool water and indoor rest. Inadequate activity may appear as howling, digging or destruction.

Health and choosing a breeder

The Dutch breed club requires hip and ECVO eye screening. Also ask about elbows, polyneuropathy, hypothyroidism, epilepsy, dwarfism and gastric torsion in the family and appropriate line-specific DNA tests. Inspect original results through Dutch Dog Data where possible. Choose free powerful movement and genetic diversity over maximum size or an excessively heavy coat.
