Character and training
The Airedale combines learning ability with terrier independence. It can excel in tracking, obedience and sport when training remains varied, rewarding and clear. Excessive repetition soon invites its own ideas. Socialise carefully with dogs and household animals and manage hunting and guarding. An adult Airedale needs genuine activity and thought every day, not only brief neighbourhood walks.
Coat and daily life
Comb the double wire coat to the skin weekly and have it stripped several times a year. Clipping alone softens colour and texture and may make skin checks harder. Inspect beard, ears and feet after outdoor work and dry ears well. Keep this athlete lean and delay cycling or running loads until physical maturity.
Health and choosing a breeder
Ask for official hip results and family records on elbows, eyes, heart, kidney disease, cancer, skin and thyroid problems. The Dutch club maintains health information. Use current surveys and breeding rules rather than relying on one breeder's claim. A good hip image cannot exclude other disease. Choose long-lived lines, stable social behaviour and low relatedness over an exaggerated heavy head or chest.
