Guardian character
The Aïdi was developed to guard land and livestock against danger. Vigilance, independent decisions and reserve with strangers do not disappear through ordinary puppy class. Socialise early and in a controlled way without forcing contact with everyone. Reward calm observation and build reliable management for visitors, deliveries and other dogs. A city apartment or busy off-lead area rarely fits this profile.
Exercise and care
Offer long walks, search tasks and cooperative work alongside secure high fencing and sufficient rest. Exhaustive ball chasing does not replace mental guidance. Brush the thick coat weekly and daily during heavy shedding and check ears, skin and pads. Never leave the dog outside to “guard” independently. Owner supervision prevents escape, conflict and persistent barking.
Health and choosing a breeder
There is no recognised Dutch breed club and the population is small. Request verifiable FCI ancestry, import records, inbreeding coefficient and official hip, elbow and eye assessment even if not formally required. Discuss thyroid disease, epilepsy and behaviour among relatives. Meet both parents away from their own property and choose recovery and manageability over maximum sharpness or mass.
