Character and exercise

Afghans are intelligent sight hunters, not dogs selected for automatic obedience. Train through rewards, patience and brief clear sessions. Harsh correction damages trust. Their prey drive makes off-lead exercise unsafe outside securely enclosed ground. Combine daily walks with regular sprinting in a suitable fenced place. Many adults are calm indoors when exercise and rest needs are genuinely met.

Coat care

The long fine coat mats quickly and needs several thorough sessions weekly, often after dampening with a suitable grooming product. Check armpits, feet, ears and trousers to the skin. Protect long ears while feeding and keep canals dry. A shorter functional pet coat may be kinder than maximum show length. Welfare comes before presentation.

Health and choosing a breeder

Dutch breed clubs require ECVO eye examination and Doppler heart screening for dilated cardiomyopathy. Ask for original recent results and family records on heart disease, sudden death, hips and gastric torsion. Sighthounds can respond differently to anaesthesia and naturally carry little fat. Discuss this with an experienced veterinarian without calling an underweight dog healthy automatically. Choose stable recovery, free movement and genetic spread.
