Character and training

The Affenpinscher is small but not a passive lapdog. It is alert, curious and sometimes persistent and benefits from brief positive training, scent games and daily walks. Reward desired behaviour and prevent barking or guarding from repeatedly paying off. Early calm socialisation with people, dogs and grooming matters. Young children must learn not to lift the dog or follow it into a retreat.

Coat and daily welfare

Comb the rough coat weekly and have it hand-stripped properly. Clipping changes texture. Keep hair clear of eyes and nose. During exercise and warm weather watch for noisy breathing, retching, blue colour, poor recovery or open-mouth breathing. These are not amusing breed sounds. Use a fitted harness and keep weight lean to avoid extra pressure on airways and knees.

Health and choosing a breeder

Dutch breeding rules include short-muzzle criteria such as a craniofacial ratio of at least 0.3 and requirements involving breathing, eyes and patellas. Request the official veterinary declaration, BOAS assessment, ECVO eye examination and patella results for both parents. Also discuss heart and dental disease and family longevity. Choose open nostrils, a visible muzzle, free movement and calm recovery over the most “monkey-like” face.
