Temperament

Turkish Vans are active, powerful cats that may form a close bond without wanting to remain on a lap. They communicate clearly when handling has lasted long enough, making respectful children and predictable interaction important. Many are curious about running water, but not every Van wants to swim. Let a cat explore water only under supervision with an easy exit. High viewpoints, sturdy scratching posts and daily interactive play give athletic behaviour a safe outlet.

Coat and environment

The cashmere-like semi-long coat has little woolly undercoat and is generally maintained with weekly combing. Seasonal change requires more frequent attention. Check the hindquarters, armpits and tail for tangles and maintain ear and dental care. The breed matures slowly and needs a large litter tray, strong carrier and generous space. Secure open water, washing machines, balconies and windows. An enclosed garden gives stimulation without allowing a conspicuous, adventurous cat to become lost or stolen.

Health and choosing a breeder

The population is not large, so family health and genetic diversity matter. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy has been reported. Ask for repeated heart ultrasound by a veterinary specialist and about sudden deaths and longevity among relatives. A negative HCM DNA result does not exclude disease developing later. Do not select only for ideal markings or odd-coloured eyes. Parents should move smoothly, hear and see well and recover quietly after activity.
