Character and movement
The Toyger contains no tiger blood. It is a domestic cat selected to give a tiger-like impression through colour, build and movement. Many are sociable and trainable and need hunting games, climbing, puzzle food and human contact every day. Offer quiet high places and respect individual limits. A heavy-looking front must not make the cat slow, stiff or breathless.
Care
The short coat is easy to maintain with gentle weekly brushing. Keep the muscular cat lean, check teeth and nails and investigate cow-hocked gait or reduced jumping. A striped domestic cat or Bengal cross is not a Toyger without a pedigree. Verify registration and do not let exotic marketing or “glitter” distract from health.
Health and choosing a breeder
TICA identifies heart murmurs possibly associated with HCM and cow hocking as reported concerns. Ask for repeated HCM ultrasound by an experienced veterinarian, free movement and Bengal-relevant DNA tests such as PRA-b and PK deficiency where present. Also ask about inbreeding, kidney and eye disease and longevity. Choose stable behaviour and a broad genetic base over an ever wider head or more extreme stripes.
