Temperament

Tonkinese often seek contact actively, follow their people and comment on the household through voice and body language. They learn quickly, enjoy retrieving and cope poorly with prolonged isolation. A compatible second cat can make a major difference, although human play and attention remain necessary. Teach desired behaviour with rewards and provide legal high climbing areas. Gradual introductions and a private retreat prevent the breed's sociable reputation from turning into forced interaction.

Grooming and enrichment

The sleek short coat needs little beyond gentle weekly brushing. Spend more time on dental care, nail checks and an enriched environment. Divide food across puzzles and several small meals, rotate wand toys and install secure climbing routes. Tonkinese can learn to open doors and cupboards, so store medication, string and dangerous food safely. Secure balconies and windows and choose an enclosure when outdoor stimulation is wanted without traffic or theft risk.

Health and choosing a breeder

The Siamese and Burmese background makes hypokalaemic polymyopathy, polycystic kidney disease, urinary stones and neonatal isoerythrolysis relevant. Ask which DNA tests apply to the lines, about kidney or urinary disease among relatives and for the breeding cats' blood groups. An incompatible pairing can severely harm kittens. HCM screening may also be appropriate from family history. Choose a muscular but not coarse cat with free breathing. Extreme heads, rare colours and claims that a cross is automatically healthy do not replace documented selection.
