Sphynx for sale in the Netherlands
The Sphynx is a nearly hairless cat whose inherited lack of protective coat and often impaired whiskers create welfare concerns. In the Netherlands, acquiring or newly keeping a hairless cat has been prohibited since 1 January 2026.

Behaviour, warmth and environment
Sphynx cats are often active and strongly people-oriented, but their search for laps, blankets and warm rooms also reflects limited insulation. They need safe warmth without contact burns, protection from cold and direct sun, stable climbing furniture and daily interactive play. Outdoor roaming is unsuitable. Clothing can rub or restrict movement and is not a general solution. An existing cat needs several warm resting choices and close monitoring for shivering, overheating or skin injury.
Skin, ears and sensory welfare
The lack of a normal coat does not create a maintenance-free cat. Skin oil, ears, claws and folds need individual veterinary-guided care. Excessive washing can damage the skin barrier. Hairlessness also reduces protection against scratches, weather and ultraviolet light. Missing or abnormal whiskers can limit important tactile information used around obstacles and openings. Choose gentle handling and an environment designed around these permanent limitations rather than presenting them as an unusual appearance alone.
Dutch law and health
Since 1 January 2026, people in the Netherlands may not acquire or newly keep a hairless cat. Transitional protection applies only to animals born before 2026 that were demonstrably microchipped before that date. Breeding was already prohibited, and covered animals may not be shown. Do not buy, reserve or import a Sphynx. Existing cats still need veterinary care and HCM monitoring with repeated specialist heart ultrasound, because a DNA result cannot exclude all causes of cardiomyopathy.
