Temperament

Somalis are usually busy observing, investigating and participating. They are people-focused without necessarily being lap cats and put their intelligence to use in retrieving, clicker games and opening anything that is poorly secured. A monotonous home can lead to night-time activity or destructive experiments. Provide daily interaction, rotating toys and safe high routes. An energetic feline companion may suit, provided introductions are gradual and each cat has enough separate food, litter, resting and scratching resources.

Grooming and activity

The ticked semi-long coat is finer than many long-haired coats and usually remains manageable with weekly combing. Check the armpits, hindquarters and plume without pulling the hair. Maintain teeth and gums and weigh the cat regularly. High activity does not always make disease-related weight loss obvious. Climbing towers, wall shelves, food puzzles and several brief hunting sessions match the natural tempo. Outdoor space should be secured against traffic, loss and hunting wildlife.

Health and choosing a breeder

Progressive retinal atrophy and pyruvate kinase deficiency have known DNA variants in Abyssinian and Somali lines. Dutch breed guidance recommends PRA, PKDef and patella assessment. Also ask specifically about renal amyloidosis, dental health and longevity among relatives. No DNA test excludes amyloidosis risk. Have the breeder explain how carriers are paired responsibly. Choose a kitten that responds clearly, moves smoothly and grows up in a normal home. A sound programme protects diversity rather than automatically removing every healthy carrier.
