Scottish Fold for sale in the Netherlands
The Scottish Fold has folded ears because of an inherited cartilage defect that also causes painful joint disease. Since 1 January 2026, the Netherlands has prohibited newly keeping or acquiring folded-ear cats as well as breeding them.

Temperament cannot justify the trait
Scottish Folds are often described as calm and sociable, but pleasant behaviour cannot make the folded ear harmless. Low activity, unusual sitting, reluctance to jump or resistance to touch may reflect pain rather than a charming breed habit. An existing cat needs gentle choice-based handling, easy access to resting places and regular veterinary pain and mobility assessment. Keep body weight lean to reduce additional joint load.
Daily support for an existing cat
Brush the dense coat weekly and inspect the ears without pulling or forcing the cartilage. Provide broad low steps, non-slip surfaces, accessible litter trays and warm supportive beds. Encourage comfortable movement through short play chosen by the cat, never by pushing through stiffness. Seek veterinary help for a thick or rigid tail, lameness, reduced grooming, hiding or changed toilet habits. There is no breeding combination that removes the defect from a folded-ear individual.
Dutch law and welfare
The ear fold is osteochondrodysplasia: the same mutation damages cartilage throughout limbs and tail and causes painful arthritis to varying degrees in every folded-ear cat. Since 1 January 2026, the Netherlands prohibits acquiring, importing or newly keeping one. Transition protection covers only cats born before 2026 and demonstrably microchipped before that date. Even they cannot be shown. Breeding was already illegal. Do not buy or reserve a Scottish Fold and arrange appropriate veterinary support for an existing animal.
