Temperament without myths
Ragdolls are often people-oriented and calm, but the name does not mean every cat relaxes when lifted or tolerates rough handling. Let the cat initiate contact and teach children to read body language. Many follow their people and may appreciate a compatible feline companion when regularly alone. Secure indoor living with an enclosed balcony, garden or run reduces traffic, theft and loss risk for this conspicuous cat.
Coat, weight and activity
The silky coat often mats less than a woolly long coat but still needs weekly combing around armpits, hindquarters and the ruff. Increase care during seasonal shedding. Ragdolls need sturdy scratching and climbing options even when they prefer the floor, plus daily hunting play and measured food. A broad body should remain muscled with palpable ribs. Calm behaviour is no reason to accept obesity or reduced mobility.
Health and choosing a breeder
HCM and PKD are important concerns, and blood-group compatibility matters to breeding decisions. Ask for repeated specialist heart ultrasound, HCM DNA status and reliable PKD screening for both parents. The breed-specific HCM DNA test cannot detect every possible cause and never replaces ultrasound. Discuss sudden death, kidney disease and longevity among relatives, inspect original documents and avoid promises that a negative panel guarantees a disease-free kitten.
