Oriental Shorthairs frequently follow people, comment on activity and learn interactive games quickly. They usually cope poorly with long solitary days. A compatible social cat may help when people are away, but introductions and separate litter, food and resting resources remain essential. Teach household boundaries with rewards and provide private retreats. Strong social behaviour does not mean the cat must accept being picked up or disturbed whenever a person wishes.

Play and functional build

The sleek short coat needs little grooming, while the active body and mind require daily investment. Offer robust high routes, food puzzles, retrieval or clicker games and secure outdoor alternatives. Maintain muscle without accepting an excessively thin condition. Selection for an ever longer, narrower head and finer limbs can harm teeth, natural birth and movement. Moderate functional conformation should outweigh novelty, colour or extreme show type.

Health and choosing a breeder

Progressive retinal atrophy has a relevant DNA test, while kidney or liver amyloidosis and PKD also require family evidence and appropriate examination. Discuss cancer, difficult birth and early organ failure among relatives. A negative PRA result says nothing about those other risks. Review original records, ask how genetic diversity is protected and choose a breeder who follows older cats. A claim that one panel makes the entire line healthy is not credible.
