Character and activity
Ocicats are generally confident, clever cats that investigate visitors, learn retrieving and enjoy participating. Despite the spots they have no recent wild cat species in their ancestry. Long daily isolation is a poor fit. Provide sturdy climbing furniture, several hunting and training sessions and a compatible companion. Let the cat control contact and always offer high retreats.
Care
The short coat needs little more than gentle weekly brushing. Exercise, teeth and weight deserve greater attention. Use measured meals and puzzles and watch the litter tray for straining, small urine spots or blood. Inability to urinate is an emergency. A dramatic pattern should not replace selection for moderate, mobile structure.
Health and choosing a breeder
Dutch sources identify PRA, pyruvate kinase deficiency, amyloidosis and urolithiasis as concerns. Request CEP290 PRA and PK deficiency DNA results, repeated HCM ultrasound and family records concerning kidney, liver and urinary disease. Clear DNA cannot exclude amyloidosis or HCM. Choose a breeder who shares original documents, relationships and health information from older relatives.
