Character

Nebelungs often attach closely to familiar people and prefer to observe strangers first. Good socialisation should produce curiosity and recovery rather than lasting fear. Never force contact and provide high hiding places, fixed routines and calm hunting games every day. A compatible cat can offer company, but noisy homes or constantly changing stimuli do not suit every individual.

Coat and environment

Comb the fine semi-long coat about twice weekly and more during shedding, especially around armpits and trousers. Do not pull mats hard. Keep the cat lean with measured food, puzzles and climbing and check teeth and nails. Blue-grey colour also occurs in non-pedigree cats. Appearance without a pedigree does not establish a Nebelung.

Health and choosing a breeder

The population is small and reliable prevalence data are limited. Ask about inbreeding, outcrossing, longevity and heart, kidney, eye and dental disease over several generations. Repeated HCM ultrasound and other investigations should match the actual line. A claim that the breed is “naturally healthy” cannot replace documents. Choose stable behaviour, free movement and broad ancestry over the longest or most silver coat.
