Welfare and Dutch rules
The extremely short legs are not a miniature variation but an inherited skeletal abnormality. Dutch welfare information explicitly lists very short legs as a harmful physical trait. Breeding animals that can pass such a feature to kittens is prohibited under the Dutch Decree on Keepers of Animals. Do not choose a newly bred Munchkin kitten and never breed an existing cat.
Daily life
An existing rescue may be sociable and playful but cannot jump, climb and land like a normally built cat. Provide broad low steps, non-slip floors, accessible litter trays and controlled weight. Watch for pain, a stiff back, abnormal gait, reluctance to jump and difficulty grooming or toileting and investigate signs early.
Health and choice
Heart screening or DNA alone cannot remove the structural welfare problem. Have the spine, chest, joints and movement assessed independently and ask a rescue for earlier imaging, pain medicine and family issues. Crosses with other breeds or hairless cats can combine several harmful traits. A low, “cute” appearance must never outweigh normal feline behaviour and pain-free mobility.
