Character

Mandalays are closely related to Burmese and are usually intelligent, people-oriented cats that join household life. They need several social play and training periods and suit long days alone poorly. A compatible cat may provide company, but separate feeding places, litter trays and retreats remain necessary. Teach children never to restrain a cat that wants to leave.

Care and exercise

The short smooth coat needs little care beyond gentle weekly brushing. Focus more on teeth, weight and muscle. Use measured meals, food puzzles and high climbing routes. Watch for neck weakness, stiff gait, pain while eating or unusual thirst and urination and seek timely investigation. A solid colour says nothing about health or breed identity.

Health and choosing a breeder

Burmese ancestry makes WNK4 hypokalaemic polymyopathy and other family risks relevant. Ask for suitable DNA results, blood types and information on GM2, FOPS, diabetes, HCM and kidney disease among relatives. Required variants depend on the actual ancestry. A carrier need not be ill but must not produce affected kittens. Choose transparent registration, genetic spread and documented health over a rare solid colour.
