Temperament and space
Maine Coons are often social, curious cats that follow household activity and communicate with quiet trills. Calm introductions can support life with respectful children, cats or cat-friendly dogs, but breed never guarantees tolerance. They mature slowly and remain playful for years. Let the cat choose contact, provide high private resting places and do not force handling simply because a large friendly-looking cat appears robust.
Coat, growth and equipment
Comb the shaggy coat at least weekly and more during shedding, focusing on armpits, belly and hindquarters. Mats pull painfully and need gentle removal. Slow growth means measured feeding and regular body-condition checks are more useful than pursuing maximum size. A Maine Coon needs a stable tall scratching structure, roomy litter trays, wide shelves and a strong carrier. Daily climbing and hunting games maintain muscle and reduce excess weight.
Health and choosing a breeder
HCM, patellar luxation, hip dysplasia and spinal muscular atrophy occur in the breed. Ask for repeated heart ultrasound by a veterinary specialist, appropriate HCM and SMA DNA status and information about joints or sudden death among relatives. A negative DNA result covers known variants only and never replaces cardiac imaging. Review original reports, identify both parents and choose functional movement and genetic diversity above record-breaking size.
