Character and environment

Lykois are often active, curious cats that can focus strongly on familiar people. Provide intensive hunting games, climbing routes and search work each day alongside quiet warm places. The sparse coat offers less protection against cold, sun and friction. Keep the cat indoors or in a secure sheltered run and check skin and pads after activity.

Coat and skin

Several loss-of-function variants in the HR gene produce the characteristic hair. A recent prospective study describes cutaneous adnexal polycystic syndrome in Lykois, with comedones and cysts of hair follicles, sebaceous glands and sweat glands. Apparently normal skin could contain microscopic changes. Have papules, blackheads, itching, odour or inflammation assessed early by a veterinary dermatologist and avoid harsh washing or scrubbing.

Health and choosing a breeder

Ask for dermatology records for both parents and older relatives, the HR foundation line, outcrossing and genetic diversity. Discuss heart, eye and kidney screening according to the pedigree too. A claim that diseased skin “belongs to the breed” is not a diagnosis or welfare guarantee. Do not choose the baldest face. Functional hair, intact whiskers and comfortable skin matter more than a werewolf appearance.
