Character

LaPerms are generally curious, people-focused cats that enjoy play before resting near their family. They can adapt to different homes when interaction and choice remain available. Offer hunting games, food puzzles and sturdy climbing routes every day and teach children to leave a resting cat alone. An adult may be more independent than a breed summary suggests. Assess individual behaviour and socialisation.

Caring for curls

Comb loose curls weekly with a wide-toothed comb and groom the longhaired variety more often where needed. Hard brushing pulls curls straight and may damage hairs. Inspect skin, ears and thinly coated areas. Whiskers should remain long and flexible even when curled. Short, breaking or missing whiskers can compromise touch and must not be a breeding goal. No curly cat is guaranteed hypoallergenic.

Health and choosing a breeder

Historical outcrossing gives the breed relatively broad ancestry, but “no known breed disease” does not mean every cat is healthy. Ask about inbreeding, skin, heart, kidney and eye disease and longevity among relatives. The breeder should explain which examinations fit the pedigree and provide general clinical checks of parents. Choose a functional coat, normal whiskers and stable behaviour over an exceptionally strong or rare curl.
