Character

Korats often form strong bonds with familiar people and may be sensitive to noise or changing routines. They are intelligent and playful and need interaction each day alongside quiet high places. A compatible companion can help. Introduce children, visitors and other animals gradually and choose a kitten that remains curious and recovers well after a startling event.

Care

The short single coat is easy to maintain with gentle weekly brushing. Keep the muscular cat lean through measured food, climbing and hunting games. Check teeth, ears and nails and watch for changes in coordination, sight, swallowing or behaviour. Silver-blue colour also occurs in other cats. Only a reliable pedigree confirms a Korat.

Health and choosing a breeder

GM1 and GM2 gangliosidosis are serious recessive storage diseases with breed-specific DNA tests. Request both parents' results and confirm that the mating cannot produce affected kittens. Also ask about low genetic diversity, HCM, kidney disease and longevity in the family. Clear GM1 and GM2 results do not exclude other disease. Responsible carrier matings can preserve diversity when the partner is clear and offspring are managed correctly.
