The Kanaani standard describes a medium to large, muscular and athletic cat. Expect extensive daily movement, high and long climbing routes, challenging hunting games and a secure run. An intelligent independent cat may become frustrated in a small, empty environment. Socialisation and character selection matter more than a “wild” look. Let children play calmly and always provide several high retreats.

Care and origin

The short coat with little undercoat only needs weekly brushing. Check teeth, ears, nails and muscle condition and prevent both obesity and chronic under-stimulation. The Kanaani is exceptionally rare. A spotted cat, Bengal cross or Oriental cross is not automatically a Kanaani without an accepted pedigree. Verify registration, import papers and parents directly with the registry.

Health and choosing a breeder

The tiny population makes inbreeding coefficient and open family records crucial, while reliable disease prevalence is scarce. Ask about heart, kidney, eye, patella and dental problems over several generations and which clinical and DNA tests match the lines used. Repeated HCM ultrasound may be appropriate. Choose a well-socialised, freely moving cat and distrust claims that rarity or a recent breed automatically guarantees health.
