Character and activity

Japanese Bobtails are usually active, sociable cats that enjoy running, jumping and learning. Many retrieve or answer their people with varied sounds. Provide interactive play, long climbing routes and puzzle feeding every day and let the cat control contact. Calm introductions can support life with children and other animals. A short-tailed cat needs no less space or movement than a long-tailed one.

Tail and care

Each short tail has a unique arrangement of curves and vertebrae and must never be pulled straight or handled roughly. Research shows the Japanese Bobtail mutation differs from Manx T-box variants, so Manx syndrome should not be assumed. Still check the individual for pain, skin trouble, flexible spinal movement and normal litter-box use. Comb the silky coat weekly.

Health and choosing a breeder

Ask about tail or spinal problems, heart, kidney and eye disease and longevity among relatives. Have a veterinarian assess hindquarters, tail base and movement, especially when the tail lies tightly against the body. The population beyond Japan is limited, making inbreeding and registration important. Choose functional movement, genetic spread and stable behaviour over the smallest or most spectacular pompom tail.
