Character and daily care

Himalayans are often calm, people-oriented cats that appreciate a predictable environment. Calmness does not remove the need for movement: offer brief hunting games, accessible scratching and climbing and controlled meals every day. Comb the long coat in layers to the skin daily, especially around armpits, belly and trousers. Teach grooming gently from kittenhood and have severe mats treated professionally.

Muzzle, eyes and heat

A flat face can cause narrow nostrils, an elongated soft palate, dental malalignment, chronic tearing and heat intolerance. Snoring, open-mouth breathing, inability to play or sleeping with an elevated head are not normal breed noises. Select open nostrils, a visible nasal bridge, closing eyelids and functional jaws and seek veterinary help for signs.

Health and choosing a breeder

Ask for PKD DNA results or kidney scans, repeated HCM ultrasound and eye examination, plus information about difficult births and early death. Siamese ancestry may add family risks. Dutch law prohibits breeding harmful traits. A colourpoint pattern, blue eyes or show title cannot offset breathlessness. Choose only a moderate type with demonstrably free breathing and independent health documents.
