Character
German Rex cats are generally described as sociable, friendly companions that enjoy play and adapt well to indoor life. Daily hunting games, climbing and human contact remain necessary. Also provide warm retreats and choice during touch. Calm introductions can support life with children and other cats, but rarity does not guarantee predictable behaviour. Assess each kitten individually.
Coat and whiskers
The short wavy coat includes guard hairs but varies between individuals in density. Groom carefully to avoid breakage and monitor bald patches, itching, scale and sensitivity to cold. The standard describes short curly whiskers. Because whiskers are essential to touch and orientation, absent, constantly breaking or non-functional hairs must not be treated solely as an attractive feature. The breed is not automatically hypoallergenic.
Health and choosing a breeder
The population is small and outcrossing to European Shorthair is allowed in some registries. Ask about inbreeding, outcross policy, longevity and skin, heart and eye disease among relatives. PRA-rdAc and pyruvate kinase deficiency DNA tests can be relevant according to the lines used. Repeated HCM ultrasound is a different investigation. A responsible breeder links each test to the pedigree and puts function before an ever stronger curl.
