The Exotic Shorthair shares the Persian’s calm nature and shortened skull but has a dense short coat. A flat face can cause serious breathing, eye, dental and birth problems, so only clearly functional non-extreme conformation is acceptable.

Calm behaviour and hidden discomfort
Exotics are often quiet companions that enjoy predictable routines and short play sessions. Very low activity can also indicate breathlessness, eye pain or excess weight and must not be labelled personality without assessment. Offer choice, daily hunting play and accessible resting platforms. Ask a veterinarian to examine noisy respiration, poor appetite, repeated tear staining or reluctance to move, and never assume snuffling is normal for the breed.
Coat, face and daily care
The plush short coat is easier than a Persian coat but its dense underhair still needs thorough brushing once or twice weekly. Check eyes, lids, facial folds, mouth and skin every day. Persistent discharge, inability to close the eyes or food difficulty is medical rather than cosmetic. Measured meals and gentle activity prevent obesity, which further compromises breathing and mobility in a compact cat.
Health, Dutch law and purchase
Shortened skulls cause BOAS, corneal ulcers, poor eyelid closure, dental disease and difficult birth. PKD and HCM also occur. Dutch law prohibits breeding a harmfully short muzzle. Choose quiet free breathing, fully closing eyes, a visible functional nose and natural reproduction. Ask for PKD DNA or kidney ultrasound, repeated specialist heart scans and family records. A short coat does not reduce skull-related suffering, and an extremely flat show type is not responsible.
