Temperament

Egyptian Maus often form close bonds with their people and prefer to assess unfamiliar visitors before approaching. That differs from persistent fear: good socialisation produces a curious cat that can recover after surprise. They are fast, agile and often communicate with a range of soft sounds. Do not force contact. Use play and rewards to build trust. A home with predictable routines and several high escape and resting places usually suits this sensitive athlete better than constant uncontrolled activity.

Exercise and grooming

The short coat needs little maintenance. Gentle weekly brushing removes loose hair and provides an opportunity to inspect the skin. Movement is the larger requirement. Offer high climbing furniture, long hunting games and food puzzles, and rotate toys before they become stale. A secure garden or enclosure permits speed without traffic or theft risk. Keep body condition lean, maintain dental care and ask a veterinarian to investigate a sudden reduction in jumping, eating or play.

Health and choosing a breeder

The population is relatively small, making diversity and open family health information especially important. Ask particularly about repeated HCM heart ultrasound, urinary disease such as FLUTD or stones and amyloidosis among relatives. A pyruvate-kinase-deficiency DNA test may be relevant to a line, but cannot replace this broader assessment. A responsible breeder should explain both results and relatedness without reducing health to one test. Select smooth movement, good muscle and stable recovery over dramatic spotting, and ask how kittens are socialised at home.
