Social and acrobatic

Devon Rex cats often climb onto shoulders, investigate household tasks and remain playful well into adulthood. Their social motivation makes long isolation unsuitable. Provide frequent human contact or a compatible companion plus separate resources. Offer stable high routes, several daily hunting games and quiet warm retreats. Individual boundaries still matter, and an energetic reputation should never excuse stealing food, unsafe climbing or constant disturbance during rest.

Coat, skin and sensory function

The fine wavy hair breaks easily, so avoid vigorous brushing and use veterinary guidance for oily skin, ears or recurrent yeast infection. Limited insulation makes safe warmth important, while direct heat and sun can injure skin. Missing or deformed whiskers can reduce close-range sensory information and communication. Choose a breeder who values functional whiskers and protective coat rather than treating these permanent limitations as a novelty or allergy solution.

Health and choosing a breeder

Ask for the CMS DNA test for congenital myasthenic syndrome, repeated specialist HCM ultrasound and assessment of knees, hips and kidneys. Blood-group knowledge helps prevent neonatal isoerythrolysis in risky pairings. An unvalidated “HCM DNA” result cannot replace echocardiography in this breed. Review original records and select breeders who follow disease and diversity across generations instead of promising that one commercial panel excludes all future illness.
