Character and care

Cymrics can be loyal, playful companions with powerful hind legs and a calm social manner. Give a healthy cat normal climbing and play while offering steps if movement becomes difficult. Comb the double long coat to the skin several times weekly, especially around armpits and trousers. Keep the area beneath the tail clean and check every day that urination and defecation remain normal.

Manx syndrome

The Cymric carries the same taillessness trait as the Manx. It can be linked with open or fused vertebrae, nerve damage, abnormal hind legs and loss of bladder or bowel control. Mating two tailless parents can also produce non-viable embryos. A short tail is therefore not an isolated cosmetic trait. Pain, abnormal hopping, incontinence or constipation needs immediate veterinary investigation.

Choosing a breeder

Do not select for a completely absent tail. Ask about every tail length in the litter, the parent mating, kitten mortality and spinal, bowel or bladder disease among relatives. Have an independent veterinarian assess sensation, gait, anus, continence and spine and do not buy a very young kitten before normal development has been followed adequately. Dutch welfare guidance warns against breeding harmful physical traits. Function must always outweigh breed appearance.
