Temperament

Cornish Rex cats are often outgoing athletes that want to join every activity. They jump high, learn quickly and may retrieve or work for clicker rewards for surprisingly long periods. Their social nature makes long daily isolation unsuitable. A compatible cat and an involved owner both matter. Introduce children and animals calmly, because enthusiasm is not permission for rough contact. Provide planned quiet periods and safe hiding places so an active cat is not required to respond to stimulation all day.

Coat, warmth and exercise

The coat consists mainly of fine curled down and provides less protection from cold, sun and abrasion. Whiskers may also be short, brittle or abnormal, although cats need them to judge distance and investigate their surroundings. Keep the Cornish Rex indoors or use secured outdoor space with warm beds. Vigorous brushing can break hairs. Gentle care is usually enough. Check skin and large ears for oily build-up. Daily climbing routes, running room and hunting games support muscle and prevent boredom.

Health and choosing a breeder

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and patellar luxation are reported in some lines, alongside skin and coat disorders. Ask about repeated heart ultrasound, patella assessment and illness or longevity among relatives. Very bare skin, missing or breaking whiskers, chronic ear inflammation or constant shivering must not be sold as harmless breed traits. Choose a breeder who selects for functional hair and genetic diversity and explains temperature and skin care honestly. The unusual coat does not automatically make the breed suitable for every allergic person.
