Character and activity

California Spangled cats were developed for a wild-looking spot pattern but are fully domestic cats. Expect an athletic animal that enjoys climbing, jumping and investigating. Provide long vertical routes, prey-directed play and food-search activities every day. An under-stimulated intelligent cat may invent its own projects. Let contact with children develop calmly and always provide a high escape route.

Care and safety

The short coat normally needs only weekly brushing. Muscle condition, teeth and weight require more attention. A secure run or balcony provides stimulation without traffic, loss or theft. Check windows and doors carefully because active cats can escape quickly. A spotted pattern does not establish breed identity. Verifiable registration is essential for this exceptionally rare cat.

Health and choosing a breeder

Reliable prevalence figures for breed-specific disorders are limited by the tiny population. That is not evidence that risks are absent. Ask about inbreeding coefficient, outcrossing, longevity and heart, kidney, eye and joint diagnoses across several generations. Parents need clinical examination and repeated HCM screening should be discussed. Choose a program that publishes genetic spread and stable temperament. Scarcity and price do not guarantee health.
