Temperament and everyday life
Many British Shorthairs enjoy being nearby without constantly sitting on a lap. That can suit a predictable home, provided daily play, interaction and choice remain available. A calm appearance must not be confused with breathlessness, pain or obesity. Introduce children and animals gradually and offer both high and low retreats. A second cat provides company only when temperaments, space and separate resources genuinely suit both animals.
Coat, play and body condition
Brush the dense plush coat weekly and more during seasonal shedding. The combination of a substantial outline, appetite and lower activity makes regular weighing and body-condition assessment important. Ribs should remain easy to feel beneath a modest covering. Use measured meals, food puzzles and several short hunting games every day. Dental care, large litter trays and easy climbing routes support comfort as the cat ages.
Health and choosing a breeder
HCM and PKD occur in the breed. Ask for repeated heart ultrasound, reliable PKD screening and family health information. An HCM DNA result alone cannot exclude disease. Entirely white cats should receive individual BAER hearing tests. Selection for a progressively shorter muzzle can cause airway, eye and dental problems and Dutch law prohibits breeding harmful conformation. Choose free breathing and a functional head, meet the mother and review original results.
