Calm, independent company

British Longhairs often enjoy sharing a room without constant lap contact. They may suit predictable households, provided daily interaction, play and choice remain available. A second cat helps only when temperaments match and separate resources are sufficient. Do not confuse quiet behaviour with comfort automatically: breathlessness, joint pain and obesity can all reduce activity. Offer low and high retreats and let the cat initiate handling.

Coat and body condition

Comb the dense semi-long coat to the skin two or three times weekly and daily during heavy shedding, concentrating behind ears, in armpits and around trousers. Mats pull on skin and need early attention. Use measured meals, several brief hunting games and accessible climbing to maintain muscle. Feel ribs and weigh regularly because the large coat and broad outline can conceal gradual fat gain.

Health and choosing a breeder

HCM and PKD are important concerns. Ask for repeated heart ultrasound by an experienced veterinarian and a reliable PKD DNA test or kidney scan. A single HCM DNA result cannot exclude disease. Entirely white cats need individual BAER hearing tests. Selection for an increasingly short muzzle can harm breathing, eyes and teeth and falls under Dutch breeding restrictions for harmful traits. Choose a functional head, free movement and transparent family health over round extremes.
